SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
Sirs, My son is 5yrs and suffers from constant nasal congestion and sniffs constantly. Antihistamines seem to make it worse, and decongestants work well. He was tested for allergy's at age 3 1/2 and came up _0_.. However I have found if I let him eat nuts his congestion is worse, also he developed a dislike for milk and most milk products. He will eat pudding and cheese. His adnoids are normal, except when he has an infection which is often. The doctors do not seem to know what to do. Can you provide me with any info on what tests we could try so we can figure out his problem. Thank You
Answer
Does your child have a profuse watery nasal discharge or is it infrequent? You need to keep in mind allergic rhinitis in him. An allergy test (skin test) would not be useful in such a young child (it is recommended in children above 8 years of age). A smear of the nasal discharge seen under the microscope would be useful to find out allergy. Also another problem that could be possible is vasomotor rhinitis i.e due to imbalance in the nerves supplying the nose causing a watery nasal discharge. Consult a good allery specialist for the same for if he has allergic rhinitis, he needs to be on long term nasal sprays.
