Question
My daughter was diagnosed with severe jaundice at 2 days old. We are looking for information on Lucy Driscol Syndrome. Can anybody help us?
Answer
Lucey Driscoll syndrome is characterized by severe jaundice in the first 4 days of life. It is a transient condition and is due to presence of an inhibitor substance in the mother's blood that prevents the action of an enzyme in the baby's liver that conjugates the bilirubin (the pigment that accumulates in access in jaundice). As a result of high bilirubin, the child has jaundice and sometimes even convulsions. Since, this inhibitor is present only for a limited time, the condition is transient. The treatment is light in the form of photo therapy, drugs such as phenobarbitone and even blood transfusion in the form of exchange transfusion.
