Answer
Your child is a low birth weight baby. Any newborn less than 2 kg is considered low birthweight. These babies require special care as they are very vulnerable. They require neonatal intensive care and need to be kept in an incubator. They cannot maintain their temperature properly and so need to be kept in an incubator. These babies are also prone to get jaundice as their mechanism to metabolise "bilirubin" (the pigment that causes jaundice) is very immature. As a result they may have high bilirubin. Any bilirubin level above 2 mg % is suggestive of jaundice. The treatment may consist of phototherapy or putting the baby in light or even blood transfusion depending upon the type of the jaundice and amount of jaundice. Low birth weight babies require care in terms of nutrition (to make up for the low weight), temperature stability and treatment for problems such as jaundice, infection, lung problems etc. They have to be monitored in high risk OPDs to detect subtle brain damage, cerebral palsy, hearing problems etc.
