Question
Can you give me any help in pediatric skin problems? My son, age 9, has Eczema dry skin and rashes all the time. We've tried Flax oil, baby oil on skin, diet change, lotions, creams, special soap etc. but he still has episodes of extreme itching and rashes on his stomach, lower back, behind the knees. He's very fair skinned and blonde hair.
Answer
What you have described seems to be something like allergic dermatitis. Allergic dermatitis in children can be very difficult to manage and can be very severe at times. The treatment consists of removing of substances that are causing the allergy such as foods, soaps, creams, lotions etc. Most of the times it is very difficult to pinpoint the substances causing allergy. Hence the best way would be to avoid anything that has artificial colors in the food items. Natural food would be the best thing to give to your child. Your doctor may prescribe certain steroid containing ointments or even antihistaminic syrups to control the disease. These are agents that are required for severe eczema and need to be taken under the supervision of a doctor.
