| Question : |
I have a friend that had Septic Arthritis
as a child. The illness was not treated correctly and now
he is suffering. He has a hard time working and a hard time
standing up, he was born in Mexico where I guess the standard
of health isn't like it is here, I am not sure, but he asked
me to find out if there is anything that can be done now to
stop the pain. His right ankle was infected and now he limps
becase there looks as though there is no bone there. He says
that he is in pain daily. Is there anything that can be done
to help him? Any medical procedure that can help him walk
better, besides giving him a prosthetic?

Answer |
Septic arthritis is not properly healed can lead to chronic problems such as destruction of the bones, fibrosis of the joint and contratures with limited movement of the joint. If the joint now is painful, then your friend would require surgery in the form of joint fusion or arthrodesis. It can only be commented upon after seeing the Xrays and the patient himself. You can consult an orthopedic surgeon who would delineate the options avaliable. You can also read the article on 'SEPTIC ARTHRITIS' on www.pediatriconcall.com or from the link given below:
