what could be the cause of less wbc (white blood corpeseles ) besides beig effected by virus and what should be done to increase its count.is there any drugs that could quicken the process...?
Answer
A low WBC count could be due to a variety of reasons such as acute viral infections, typhoid fever, chronic diseases such as HIV, cancers etc and even suppression due to drugs or increased destruction as by the spleen. The white blood cells are made up of different cells such as neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, monocytes and basophils. The cells have a life span of approximately 2-7 days in the blood. Thus at a time new cells are being formed and the old ones are getting destroyed. The cells become low when either the formation of cells decreases or the rate of destruction increases. Thus a change can occur in the WBC count within 2-7 days. Depending upon the cause that has caused the low count, the treatment varies. If the count is low due to typhoid or other bacterial infections, treatment consists of antibiotics. If the count is low due to bone marrow suppression (the WBCs are formed in the bone marrow) either due to viral infections, drugs or even cancers, the treatment would be towards the cause as well as use of agents that stimulate the bone marrow to produce WBCS faster. If the spleen is enlarged and causing increased destruction that is causing life threatening infections then the treatment would be surgery to remove the spleen.
