Question
Do you have information on FTT and medications that induce hunger?
Answer
Failure to thrive is seen in a child less than 5 years of age when the weight of the child is less than the 5th percentile or the weight drops down by 2 standard lines as per the weight chart. The causes of failure to thrive are plenty of which the commonest is nutritional i.e. Improper feeding. The other common organic causes are heart diseases, cystic fibrosis, chronic infections such as tuberculosis, HIV, chronic lung disease, chronic renal failure, RTA and many more. To detect the cause requires lot of investigations and treatment includes treatment of the cause as well as dietary modification. Do you want to know about medications that induce appetite or those that cause loss of appetite? There are a few medications that are available to induce appetite. These are the ones that contain cyproheptadine. Regarding loss of appetite, there are some medications that cause nausea and hence loss of appetite and some that change the taste in the mouth and so loss of appetite.
