Question :
I have a 9 month old baby boy. Yesterday, I noticed a soft lump on the right side of his head , just above the ear. On getting X-rays done, it was found that he has a fracture in the skull. CT scan has been adviced but I have not been given a date so far for it. I am very worried as to what could be the reason for this soft swelling. The doctor said that there is a possibility of a leakage. Please explain what that is and what might the process that they will do.Please Help!!
Answer
Sometimes, a skull fracture may be accompanied by an injury to the brain causing a bleed on top of the dura (the covering of the brain) called as epidural hematoma or underneath the dura called as subdural hematoma. This could increase the pressure within the brain leading to drowsiness, vomiting etc. A CT scan of the brain is required to check for this bleed and any injury to the brain if any. If there is a bleed it may need to be evacuated urgently. A soft tissue swelling on top of the hematoma signifies a swelling due to the fracture and does not signify about an epidural/subdural hematoma. It would be wiser to get a CT scan as early as possible. If that is normal, you need not worry as the fracture would heal soon.
