Question
What is the profile of a filipino suffering from renal failure?
Answer
It depends on whether the person is having acute renal failure (ARF) or chronic renal failure (CRF). A person with ARF may present with decreased urine output, high blood pressure, swelling over the body (may be present or absent) and a rising blood creatinine and BUN with uncontrollable high potassium in the blood and increased acid content in the blood. A patient with CRF may present as hypertension, low hemoglobin requiring transfusion, short stature, rickets or bony deformities, high acid in the blood and increased creatinine and potassium. The patient is clinically stable and passes adequate urine but requires treatment for the other metabolic problems. The presentation may depend on the precipitating cause of renal failure.
