Question
My son had 2 faint orange spots in his urine diaper. I took him and the diaper to my pediatrician and he explained that it was not blood but crystals in his urine - We took a urine sample to check for infection - which was negative. I just wanted to know more about what caused the orange spots.
Answer
Orange color urine could be due to a variety of causes. The commonest is due to some food colors such as phenolphthalein, beet etc. It could also be due to drugs such as Rifampicin, multivitamins etc. Finally, it could just be a concentrated urine where due to poor water intake, the urine concentrates and becomes yellow or dark orange in color. If the urine examination was normal i.e. there was no presence of blood, crystals in the urine examination then these are the things that should be ruled out.
