Question
I AM 24 YEAR FEMALE, I HAVE 2 BROTHERS 20 & 21 YEARS RESPECTIVELY SUFFERS WITH THALESSEMIA IN OUR FAMILY, AND NO ONE HAS EVER SUFFER FROM ANY GENETIC DISORDER, MYSELF AND MY MOM & FATHER BLOOD FILM AND ELECTROPHORESIS ARE NORMAL, I WILL BE MARRYING SOON, WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OR RISK OF HAVING THALESSEMIA IN ANY CHILDREN, AND THIS IS REALLY VERY DISTRESSING FOR ME
Answer
SINCE BOTH YOUR BROTHERS ARE THAL MAJOR, YOUR PARENTS MAY BE CARRIERS (THAL MINORS). YOU HAVE MENTIONED THAT YOUR ELECTROPHORESIS WAS NORMAL? DID IT SHOW THE THAL TRAIT OR WAS IT ABSOLUTELY NORMAL? IF IT WAS ABSOLUTELY NORMAL, THEN THE RISK FOR THAL MAJOR IN YOUR CHILDREN IS ALMOST NIL. HOWEVER, IF IT SHOWED THE THAL TRAIT AND IF YOUR HUSBAND IS ALSO A CARRIER, THEN THE CHANCES OF A CHILD WITH THAL MAJOR IS 25%. NOW A DAYS, THERE ARE TESTS AVAILABLE THAT CAN HELP TO DIAGNOSE ANTENATALLY WHETHER THE FOETUS IS A THAL MAJOR OR NOT.
