Question
Dear sir, My grandson 3 years old is suffering from Nephrotic Syndrome. He was on 30mg prednisone/day for 6 weeks and at present 20mg. Prednisone every alternate day since last 2 months. Doctor has advised to give him atleast 400 gm milk daily. But he does not like to drink any milk and does not like to take any form of milk like custard, curd, cheese etc. He used to drink milk when he was on daily dose of Prednisone. Please advice us what best can be done to make him healthy. Thanking you for helping us
Answer
If your child is now in remission, he needs to take a good protein intake. Milk is a good source of protein. If your child does not like milk, try to add flavours such as chocolate, Milo to make it tastier. The other sources of proteins would be eggs, pulses and even protein- rich biscuits. Nuts such as peanuts, cashewnuts and almonds are also good source of proteins. In non-vegetarian food, meat and fish are also rich sources of proteins. Thus, in addition to milk other protein rich food can be supplemented.
