Question
My 28-month daughter has a healthy appetite and often asks for things to eat. However, many times, she has hardly finished eating her food, when she throws up whatever she had eaten. Weight gain is normal, but i suppose it is because we also still give her bottle feeds as well. However, I am still worried why she throws up. In a day, she may throw up once or twice, but will still eat things like cheese, etc and retain it at other times. We never force her to eat anything. Any clues on what I should do?
Answer
Does your child throw up only liquids or even solids? If she predominantly throws up liquids, then the treatment would be to give her thickened and solid feeds. Sometimes, infants have a problem of reflux as a result of which they throw up. Most of them outgrow it by 2-3 years of age. If she is throwing up even solid food, she may need evaluation in the form of barium study to rule out conditions such as a sliding hernia. The other thing to do is to give her small but frequent feeds. Rather than taking a large meal at a time, small quantity feeds may help in preventing the stomach to be overfilled up and then overthrowing.
