Question
My 6 year old daughter has had one cervical lymph node enlarged >1yr. She has now developed an enlarged cervical node on the other side of her neck and subsequent growth of the existing node since she developed strep throat 2 months ago. She was successfully treated with antibiotics and recovered, but her tonsils are grossly edematous and her lymph nodes remain enlarged. What are the possible causes?
Answer
The tonisllar infection could itself be a cause of the enlarged nodes. However, they usually respond to antibiotics. If the nodes persist and become larger (>1cm), she would need to be evaluated to rule out causes such as tularemia, tuberculosis and even a lymphoma. A lymph node biopsy would be the best mode to detect the same.
