Question
Our 21 month old son has been urinating a "cloud" of uric acid crystals for 4 days. He was treated for dehydration and rehydrated at the E.R. following a severe bout of vomiting and diarrhea lasting 3 days (apparently a virus that has been going around). His serum creatinine, BUN, and electrolytes are now normal, and his U.A. and culture are basically normal except for the uric acid crystals which even leave a stain in his diaper. How long will this go on, and should I be concerned about this? (My pediatrician admits this is unusual, but thinks it is benign) My son does not appear to have any pain with urination, but is still not 100% since this has occurred. Any ideas?
Answer
What you need to check is a 24 hours urine for uric acid and check the levels. If the levels are high, it could be predisposing for uric acid stones. If the levels are within normal limits, then it should not be a cause for worry.
