Question
PLEASE NOTE MY CORRECTED E-MAIL ADDRESS!! Dear Doctor: My 13 yr. old son has been suffering w/on-and-off stomach aches (I thought it happened because he has very little appetite & that it might be hunger pains), however, last night he started w/a very bad stomachache which then moved to his right side, down into the groin & around his lower back. He also told me that he feels a burning sensation when urinating. He has a pretty high pain tolerance & told me this has been happening for approximately 6 weeks! This seems to me to be a kidney problem, possibly kidney stones. Today, he still has pain but is very active (he was diagnosed w/ADHD @ approximately 6 years of age & takes Concerto on weekdays for school & homework purposes). Today is Saturday so none of our physicians are in their offices. Should I take him to the emergency room today or, since this has been going on for so long, can I wait to make an appointment for him on Monday? He has been complaining of the stomach ache on & off this week but now the symptoms & pain seem to be escalating. I could certainly use your advice @ your earliest convenience -- Thank you so much from a worried mother!
Answer
You are very correctly thinking of a kidney stone as the pain seems to be going from the loin to the groin. You need to get him treated urgently if the pain is too severe as he may require IV fluids and also painkillers. You also need to get him evaluated for other causes of pain such as intestinal obstruction and even appendicitis. He needs urgent diagnosis and treatment.
