Question
Please tell me I should be concerned. My 4-year-old son grinds his teeth whilst he is asleep. This happens through the night. What is the cause of this happening and is there something I should do?
Answer
The cause of grinding of teeth is still unknown but it is postulated to be due to stress and emotional upsets. Prolonged grinding of teeth can lead to damage to the teeth and the gums. The best way to prevent this is to wear a night guard. This is an acrylic piece of plastic used to cover and prevent the teeth from coming together while sleeping at night. Children usually overcome this by 4-5 years of age.
