How does an individual get hearing disorder? I've heard about infants/individual with inborn hearing impairment, why is this so? What is cochlear implant?

Cochlear implant is a device that is put in the middle ear if the person has deafness due to affection of the hair cells in cochlea. Cochlea is a shell shaped organ in the middle ear which is responsible for hearing. Thus it is useful only in patients with hearing loss due to cochlear damage.
