Question
My wife has just had her 20 week scan. She is pregnant with twins following a successful IVF course. Both babies appeared to be in good condition, however one if the babies has been diagnosed with renal pelvic dilatation. he measurement being 6.5mm. The bladder was also seen to be full. What does all this mean and what are the possible long term effects. Thank you for your time and help.
Answer
A pelvic dilatation implies obstruction to urine from that kidney. The obstruction could be anywhere from the kidney, ureter, bladder and even the urethra. If the bladder is also full, urethral obstruction such as PU valves should be kept in mind. A serial USG may be required to see what happens to the obstruction. If it resolves on its own, there is nothing to worry. If it remains, an ultrasound on day3 of birth would be required to determine further course of action. .
