SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
I have a 2.5 yr old son who has a hemorrhoid that appears after he goes #2. We probably noticed this in the last 6 mths or so. His pediatrician says that there is not much to do as long as it is not all the time or causing him any pain. My question is what to do to get rid of it and what it means for such a young person to get hemorrhoids? Does it mean that he will have those types of problems his whole life? He has really never had any constipation issues and regularly goes once and occasionally twice in one day. Please let me know if you can answer my questions. It's very disturbing to us! Thanks!
Answer
Hemorrhoids is children is rare though not unusual. It usually causes bleeding in stools rather than appearing when he passes motions. Have him examined by a pediatric surgeon to check whether it is not a rectal prolapse. If there is a rectal prolapse, he would need to be dewormed and advised high energy high fire diet. It it is hemorrhoids, the best would be to just wait. If he gets pain or difficulty in passing stools then intervention may be required.
