Question
I have a 5 year old child who started having pain in her right ankle after jumping on a trampoline yesterday. The pain has since radiated up her leg to the knee making it difficult for her to walk. The right foot seems colder than the other one now. Other symptoms include sore throat, red swollen eyes and a temp of ~99-100 degrees. She is complaining about muscle pain in her muscles and legs. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Answer
First and foremost an ankle sprain needs to be ruled out. A fracture in children is very unlikely, however if she has severe pain, an X-ray of he ankle may be useful. She would require to keep her ankle as steady as possible and an elastocrape bandage would be useful. A painkiller such as ibuprofen or paracetamol would be required to decrease the pain and if the swelling is more hot water pack may be useful. Secondly, she seems to have a throat infection which looks like a viral fever, however get her examined by a doctor to rule out streptococcal infection.
