Question
I took my 2 mo. old son to the doctor because his lymph nodes have been swollen for the past 7 weeks despite the fact that he was placed on medication when he was 4 weeks old. The answer I was given I am very unsure of. I was told that the original cause of the swelling was and would always be unknown but that him having cradle cap us causing to remain swollen. He does have a very light case of cradle cap, but could this cause 5 lymph nodes to be so swollen that you can see them? Do you feel like I should take his to a different doctor just to make sure because no lab or any other test was done to reach this answer?
Answer
If the lymph nodes have remained the same for past 7 weeks, he needs to be evaluated further. One has to rule out immunodeficiency in him as it is too early to have lymph nodes enlarged at 1 week of life. Second an intrauterine infection also needs to be ruled out. All these need specialized tests. Lastly, if everything shows up negative a biopsy of the node may be required. Consult a pediatrician for the same.
