Question
An otolaryngology's has suggested my son has his adenoids removed because of fluid in the ears. They have tried to reduce the adenoids size with medicines for three months unsuccessfully. Is removal a good choice?
Answer
Repeated throat or ear infections leading to loss of school days or poor weight gain are an indication for tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy if either chronic tonsillitis or adenoids respectively are the cause. Each case is decided individually and your doctor would be the best guide. Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are usually deferred till 5 years of age until and unless they cause severe problems.
