Question
My son aged 18 months has been having high fever for the last 4 days along with severe diarrhea (loose motion at least 5-6 times a day). He is being treated for viral of the stomach. He was on anti-diarrhea, paracetamol and a throat medicine for the last 3 days. His condition did not improve. Today his doctor has given him antibiotics. How long does this condition last? Could he be suffering from dengue?
Answer
It is difficult to predict as to how long the diarrhea would last. The viral diarrhea can last from 2 days to 14 days and bacterial diarrhea would depend on the amount of infection. Sometimes, an infectious diarrhea can lead to lactose intolerance i.e. intolerance to milk and in such a situation, continuation of milk can lead to persistent diarrhea. Regarding dengue, it can cause diarrhea as any viral diarrhea and a blood dengue titres would help in confirming the diagnosis.
