Question
URGENT!! I have just found out that a colleague that I have held meetings with since December 2002 has Shingles. When we first met I was about 29 weeks I am now 34 wks. Has my baby been exposed and in any danger. Should I mention this to my doctor?
Answer
Yes, you should mention this to your doctor. And if you had chicken pox earlier you need not worry as you are immune to it and so your baby would be unaffected. A blood test to check your antibody titre to chicken pox would be useful. Chicken pox in pregnant mothers prior to 20 weeks is dangerous. However in later stages, the mother develops the antibody that will pass on to the fetus and protect the fetus. If you get chicken pox within 5 days prior to delivery and 3 days post delivery, your child would require treatment for same.
