Fifth disease is a common viral infection that happens mostly in children. Fifth disease is spread mainly by contact with the mucus of infected people usually through coughing or sneezing. The main symptom of fifth disease in children is a blotchy, red rash that begins on the cheeks and within a day or two is followed by a pink lace-like pattern, which spreads to the exposed areas of the arms and legs. In the beginning, the facial rash may cause the child to have a characteristic slapped face appearance. The rash usually fades within seven to ten days, but may return over a one to three week period, if the child is exposed to sunlight or heat. Fifth disease is usually diagnosed clinically. Treatment is rarely needed. The rash usually clears on its own within ten days. If a headache or joint pain occur, Tylenol may be taken. |
