Question
I am looking for diet advice for my daughters, aged 8, weight 62 pounds, height 4' 3" and 9, weight 107, height 4' 7" They stopped eating all meat, fish, poultry about 6 weeks ago. They do eat diary, but one hates eggs. The other hates peanut butter. I wonder if they can get enough protein. I am trying to get complimentary proteins like legumes with grains, but am not making very good progress. What are the daily requirements for protein in this age group?
Answer
From the data provided it is clear that both are on overweight side and the key to good health is that they need to place the meals around balance of good health. To advise on dietary intake I will need further information like diet history. But as a thumb rule the requirements of protein for that age group are between 22.8-28.3 grams/day. Aim 2-3 servings per day are enough to meet requirements. 1 serving is 30 gm cheese 1-2 eggs 3-6 tablespoon of cooked beans 50-80gms tofu/qourn.
