Question
I am looking for information about "tics" that a six-year-old boy would have. Last year our family physician checked him and said that it would pass, and it sometimes occurs in children of that age group. These "tics" have returned in varying symptoms. My husband and I are extremely concerned. Last year it was a strong exaggerated blinking and a honking noise. This time the blinking varies from that of last year, and now he shakes as if he is having a small spasm or seizure in his arms and/or head. Where should I look for information on this?
Answer
Tics are movements or sounds that are repeated over and over. A person with a tic cannot control the movement or sounds. Most tics go away after a few months. Sometimes one or two tics will last for many years. Excessive blinking, facial grimacing, or vocalizations such as frequent coughing, sniffing, clearing the throat are common tics. The tic might seem to either begin for no appreciable reason, or perhaps be incited by something. Tics are often worse when a person is stressed, tired or anxious. Tics can also run in families and in children with ADHD and learning problems. Medications taken for ADHD may make tics worse. Since, your child's tics have been going on for more than a year, consult your doctor for further evaluation. If the tics are interfering with regular life, he could be started on medication under supervision of the doctor. Also, do not remind your child about the tic as it may pass off faster if not reminded. Please do consult your doctor for further advice.
