Question
Dear doctor, My son is 17 months old & is suffering from prolapsed of rectum. This problem actually started from diarrhea somewhere in july . So we took him to a pediatrician to treat his diarrhea and told him regarding protruding of rectum while passing stool. At that moment's doctor advised us to change the diet with full of vegetable & fruits and further told us to observe the baby. As the problem continued so we took him again after a month to the doctor that time he gave some d-worming medicines Zyrtex, stating that it may be due to worms which sometime loosen the muscles of anus. Doses where given as recommended by the doctor. Only after the second dose & also the change in diet helped to resolve the problem. But I didn't see any type of worms in the stool. But Later after two moths , my son suffered from diarrhea once again ,which lead to the prolapsed of rectum This time the doctor told us that we will observe for 3 to 6 months. As The times passes the things got resolved .But yesterday after a very long time I noticed the rectum protruding out from anus. I would like to know whether this problem is very serious, needed a surgery or can be solved as the child grows. My son strains while passing stool even when his stool is soft. How can I get rid of this straining, even the diet is given to him as recommended by the doctor.
Answer
What is the weight of your child? If the child is underweight, then prolapse of rectum may occur due to loss of muscle and muscle tone. Worm infestation may also cause prolapse to occur and a repeat course of deworming would be useful. Since the prolapse seems to be a recurrent problem, a visit to the pediatric surgeon would be worthwhile to check if it requires surgical intervention. Diet is very important and as far as possible he should have natural fruits and vegetables and avoid overcooked food and artificial food.
