Question
My older sister has a 10 week old baby. Since she was born she developed a round bump on the top of her right eye, a little below the brow. It has grown bigger and bigger but is know the size of a small golf ball. She is a very contented baby and her field of vision is ok & is being checked often. Since she is so young they can not operate on her. The first diagnosis we got was that it was a non malignant capillary haemangoma- but they would not drain the fluid unless her field of vision was going. My sister recently went to the hospital and has now been told it is a vascular lesion which will not go down for about five years. My sister and I are very upset as we want to know if the baby girl will be ok. Is this normal? Can it turn malignant ? How often to babies get this? Please can you help. Kind regards.
Answer
Capillary hemangiomas are one of the most common benign orbital tumors of infancy. They characteristically have rapid growth in infancy with spontaneous resolution later in life. 50% capillary hemangiomas disappear by 5 years and 70% by 7 years of age. Patients usually present with a unilateral mass over the eyelid, or brow lesion. Treatment for capillary hemangiomas is simple observation. Since most of these lesions regress on their own, there is no need to intervene unless ophthalmic (vision disturbances),dermatologic (cosmetic)and other complications such as heart failure occur. Steroid cream application, steroid injections and even laser surgery have been successfully tried.
