SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
my 3 yr. old daughter has a possible cleft palate. her pediatrician says she has all the symptoms except the actual cleft. he says there is just a bump where her palate joined, and it looks like it wasn't supposed to meet. he wants to send her to a specialist but i'm just wondering if that is really necessary. is surgery a must if you cant actually see an outward cleft without thorough exam? thank you for your time.
Answer
What exactly are the symptoms of your daughter? Does she have milk or fluids coming out through her nose every time she eats or drinks? If yes, a high possiblity of cleft palate is there and she would to be examined for the same. A cleft palate is visible on examination and sometimes there may be just a submucous cleft i.e. a cleft in the soft palate which may not be seen as it is present posteriorly. The other condition that mimics cleft palate is incompetence of the velopharygeal folds as a result of which the food regurgitates in the nose. The patient would also have a nasal voice in this conditions. Surgery may be required for both thc conditions.
