Question
My friend is breast feeding and her baby falls asleep frequently while feeding. He was not gaining weight, so the nurses had her supplement with formula. I suggested that she nurse the baby and then switch to the other side and pump the rest of the milk out of the breast he was on to get her milk supply increased. Was this good advise or not?
Answer
PLease read the article on "BREAST FEEDING" on www.pediatriconcall.com or from the link given below:

http://www.pediatriconcall.com/forpatients/CommonChild/breastfeeding.asp

Also please do note that starting formula feed is not the answer to the problem. The main problem seems to be latching at the breast following which the baby is not able to suck properly, gets tires and goes off to sleep. Ensure that both the baby and the mother are comfortable while feeding. The baby takes both the nipple and the areola in the mouth while sucking and suck completely at one breast and then at the other to ensure that he gets both the formilk and the hindmilk. Foremilk will quench the thirst and hind milk will give him satiety.
