| Question : |
Dear sir, My grandson 34 months old is suffering from Nephrotic Syndrome. It is first occurance of this. He is on prednisone 30mg / day, since last four weeks and not 4 months as I typed wrongly 4 months in my last Querry. Sorry for that. We are worried as he does not like to drink water at all, but he always sucks the mothers breast still now even after many tries to weaning. Although his Protein level in urine has lowered since 3 days after starting of medicine even sometimes we get ++ level of protein in his urine and again it goes back to traces. Is it normal? Does low intake of water can cause this disease? Please advice us. Thanking you for prompt reply and support. waiting for your reply. |
Answer |
If he has been on Prednisolone 30mg / kg right from the start and has responded well initially, then 2+ proteinuria could signify an underlying infection. If infection is ruled out, we would have to wait and watch whether he is a steroid dependent nephrotic syndrome or not. That would depend on how he improves later on. Drinking less water does not cause this disease. Most of the times the cause is idiopathic and in a few it could be secondary to diseases such as malaria, chronic infections or autoimmune disroders. Regarding breast feeding, you will have to restrict him from it so as to wean him off. |
