Question
My niece is 13. She started her periods last fall. I January, she stopped having them and has not had a period for 9 months. In that time, her mother passed away. She also complains of tiredness and loss of appetite. She is on acne medication. Are these related and should I be worried? Thanks so much.
Answer
Initial periods may be irregular for 1-2 years after which a regular cycle is formed. On top of it your niece has had emotional trauma in the form on passing away of her mother. This can upset the hormonal balance. However, 9 months is too long a time. Get her evaluated by a gynecologist and maybe even an ultrasound of the pelvis would be useful to come to the correct diagnosis. She also seems to be suffering from depression from her symptoms of loss of appetite and tiredness. A visit to the child psychologist may be useful to remove any guilty feeling that she may be harboring.
