SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
Dear sir, My grandson,35 months old suffering from Nephrotic Syndrom. He was on 30 mg oral Prednisone daily for six weeks. His protien in urine turned negative. He is on 20 mg oral Prednisone every alernate day since last week. Now his Prtien level in urine has incresed to 1+. Doctor advised to continue the treatment for another six week. Now he has lost his appetite. He does not want to eat regular diet.Neither he drinks milk, fruit juice even avoids drinking water. however he asks for deep fried things like Potatochips, Poorees, etc. He also asks for Maggi noddles. Whether we can offer him deep fried foods? Please advice us.Is there nothing wrong in that? What should we do? Thanking you.
Answer
In nephrotic syndrome apart from the fluid overload and loss of proteins in the urine, there is increase in the blood cholesterol. Now that his urine protein is 1+ and he is edema free, he can be given normal salt and high protein diet. However, it would be better to avoid fried food in view of the increased cholesterol.
