Question
In the past month, my 12 year old daughter has developed a very strong twitch under her right eye. It comes and goes, sometimes lasting days, sometimes minutes. What could this be? Where should I take her to have it checked, the pediatrician or an eye doctor. She just had her vision checked and an eye exam two weeks before this all started and everything was fine. Thanks.
Answer
What you are describing is a condition called as tics affecting the eye. It is also known as "BLEPHAROSPASM". It manifests itself as an uncontrollable, forcible closure of the eyelids. In some cases, other muscles in the face can twitch as well, especially around the cheek and brow. It is caused by abnormal nerve impulses to the eyelid muscles. It is widely believed that stress is a contributing factor. Insufficient lubrication of the eye by tears may also play a role. These minor spasms usually disappear on their own. You need to consult your pediatrician for the same.
