Question
My 8 yr old daughter has recently pulled out her hair so much that she has a bald spot larger than a quarter on her head. Prior to this she pulled out her eyelashes. She said that she pulled out her hair to avoid pulling out her eyelashes. It seems to be some type of nervous habit but I don't know what to do about it. There is nothing major going on that would cause such unusual behavior.
Answer
What your child is suffering from is a condition known as "trichotillomania". Trichotillomania (ttm) is an impulse disorder that causes people to pull out the hair from their scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, or other parts of the body, resulting in noticeable bald patches. It is currently defined as an impulse-control disorder. Ttm seems to strike most frequently in the pre- or early adolescent years. Treatment consists of behaviour therapy and some medications if the disease is very severe. Consult a child psychologist for the same.
