Question
My 1 yr. old son was operated for pyloric stensis when he was 3 months. of age. After the surgery, he gained weight and is now around 9 kgs. He is quite active and naughty by nature. However, he is able to take only liquids / semi solids foods easily even now. I mean, milk, ceralac, juices, kanjis are easy to be fed but the moment, some solid is tried to be fed, he gets a strong vomiting sensation and brings the entire thing out. He shows an interest in eating chaklis, chapatis, eatables etc. but is not able to because as soon as the food touches the throat, he coughs and brings it out. So I have to grind the rice with a little bhaji in a mixer and when this food is fed, he is able to take it easily without any vomiting sensation. He also recurrently gets cough & cold. I am a little worried as to whether there is any problem with his system / throat. Pl. answer doctor, as to when he'll start taking solids like other children of his age. Kindly advise.
Answer
The present symptoms probably have no relation to his previous operation of pyloric stenosis.Pyloric stenosis causes obstruction at the stomach outlet, whereas now the child seems to be unable to swallow solids. Firstly make sure how many teeth have erupted and is the child chewing solid food properly or not. It is not unusual for some children to have difficulties to change from liquid diet to solid one. If he continues to have problems in swallowing then the upper food pipe needs to be evaluated by X rays( Barium Swallow) initially.
