Question
My son has cephalhematoma's that cover half of his head from delivery. No forceps or vacuum were used in his delivery. I was told that it would go away on it is own and not to worry. I was told that as long as they stayed soft that it would be fine. I am worried because they have become hard and have not gone down at all. But now I am being told that I still should not worry that they will go away in six month's. I wanted to know if I should do something about them.
Answer
How old is your son? Usually a cephalhematoma takes months to recover. If it hardens it suggests underlying calcification that may need to be aspirated. Also since he had a hematoma without any precipitating factor such as forceps or vacuum delivery, an underlying bleeding disorder in him should be ruled out.
