Question
My 6 year old daughter's taste buds on the front part of her tongue seem to be enlarged. Is this symptomatic of something serious? I've never heard this before. To date, she does not have any allergies and otherwise is in excellent health with no other symptoms. Please advice.
Answer
Does the tongue appear black or white? If it is black, this enlargement could be due to increase in the size of the filiform papillae on the tongue making it look hairy. It is also called as hairy tongue. This could be normal or could be due excessive use of tobacco, antibiotic therapy, exposure to food colorings, vitamin deficiency, gastrointestinal disorders and poor oral hygiene. Treatment consists of improving the oral hygiene or treatment of precipitating factors. For more details on oral hygiene, read the article on DENTISTRY FOR CHILDREN or from the link given below:

If the tongue appears white, it could be due to fungal infection. You may need to consult your doctor to find the exact cause.
