SPECIALIST ANSWERS
Question :
My 3 year old daughter had a vascular ring(rt side dominant dbl aortic arch) repaired when she was 12 weeks old. This past year she has had problems with respiratory infections loud breathing and choking on food. We were sent to OSCHNER hospital where several tests were run. She has been diagnosed with Tracheo and Larangeomalasia. The Vascular surgeon said that the area where it has occured is not in an area that would be caused by the vascular ring. He is stumped right now and looking for answers. Can anyone direct me to a physician who specializes in Larangeo and tracheomalacia?
Answer
Larango tracheomalacia is a disorder that is due to congenital narrowing of the wind pipe. This causes difficulty in breathing and noisy breathing. This condition subsides as the child grows as the windpipe increases iun size. One does not have to do anything about it. If the child has lot of noisy breathing, making him lie down on his tummy (prone) may decrease the stridor.
