Question
My son who was born recently suffered cephahematoma due to assisted vaginal delivery with vacuum suction. The swelling and skin lacerations have gone, however he is still on Phenobarb which he is being administered to prevent mild seizures which he had due to the birth injury. My Question: How long will he be on this medication and full recovery and is he likely to develop any long term effects due to the trauma he has gone through...

Thanks in advance
A worried father.
Answer
If your child had seizures at birth, it may be due to intracranial bleed as well and not due to cephalhematoma alone. One may need to do serial ultrasounds of the brain to see if the bleed is resolving as well as developmental milestones to see if he grows well. Regarding Phenobarb, a minimum of 3 months may be necessary and EEG may be required at 3 months. If abnormal, it may be required for longer time. You need to consult a pediatric neurologist for same.
