Answer
A child born with a separation in the upper lip is said to have a cleft lip. A similar birth defect in the roof of the mouth, or palate, is called a cleft palate. Surgery is generally done when the child is about 10 weeks old. A baby with cleft lip may have problems feeding. There are special baby bottles that can help. The baby is held uprightand fed to prevent regurg of milk into the nose and mouth. Consult a plastic surgeon for the surgery.
The other problems seen with cleft lip is dental problem in the form of missing teeth or supernumary teeth and may require orthodontic treatment in the teens. Speech may also be a problem and may require early intervention by a speech therapist. However, the overall prognosis is good.
