Question
Our 16 month old daughter experienced a long bout (3-4 months) of diarrhea earlier this year. It resolved itself while it was being investigated by a variety of experts, as did the rectal prolapse that went along with it. After about a week of normal stools, she has developed very pale (tan-colored) stools that seem to have sand in them. (We know it's not sand, but that gives you an idea of the texture.) Otherwise, they are of normal texture, and although they're odd-smelling, they're not nearly as foul as the diarrhea. Are pale, sandy stools normal? She eats very well and drinks about 2 cups of water daily in addition to older babies' formula.
Answer
If there was a rectal prolapse, one should also rule out worm infestation. A stool examination would be useful. If she is gaining weight and eating well, there is nothing to be worried about.
