Question
My son is 6 years old and he has acid reflux, he started this very slightly as and infant, then about august 2003 he started having episodes were he would choke, and would be unable to eat . Then in Nov.2003 we saw a specialist, and he RX Prevacid 15mg in AM. from Nov.03 till present 4/19/04 He is now taking 30mg Prevacid with a tsp. and a half of mylanta in Am. and PM. so 60 mg daily and he is still suffering, at times unable to even swallow liquid, this has happened on three different occasions, the longest being 15 days ...and he lost 14 1/2 pounds he finally weighs 52 pounds again. He is allergic to dairy, and many meds and he has asthma, plus other problems in the former queries please give me your opinion, I'm so worried that I am not being insistent enough, we have no answers. I want to know how to make, and keep him well. My son is beside himself with (anxiety) aches and pains, associated with all these conditions. Please help? Sorry to be so long winded.
Answer
Such severe reflux that is causing weight loss and even episodes of asthma and choking and uncontrolled on drugs would require surgery. You need to get his Barium swallow and consult a pediatric surgeon for the same.
