Question
My son,age-16 months, was sometimes having blood stains in stools. He did not have any Constipation or Diarrhoea. However once passing the stool the Rectum came out in a shape of red grape. We took him to a surgeon who pushed it back by applying some jelly medicine. He prescribed stool softener medicine and suggested it may be polyps and can be removed along with endoscopy .We want to know whether it is Prolapse of Rectum or Polyps. Is immediate surgery required or can we wait with` some medicine. Are their similar cases with infants. Why has it occurred and if change in diet is required.
Answer
Prolapse of the rectum occurs in patients with malnutrition, worm infestation and muscle weakness. Polyps usually leading to asyptomatic bleeding from the GI. To definitely diagnose a polyp, a scopy or a ba enema may be requires. Polyps in children are seen isolated or part of Juvenile Polyposis syndrome. If there are plenty of polyps on scopy and there is family history of similar polyps in the family, he may require further evaluation to determine whether it needs to be dealt with further.
