Question
My niece is 8, she has biliary atresia. she was operated on at 6 weeks old (Kasai). She has been doing extremely well. she has strep throat, and her billirubin is up, her urine is orange in color. Please send me any information you might have regarding this disease in school age children. what to look for as far as problems, diet, etc. can this just be because she is dehydrated from throwing up yesterday?
Answer
Streptococcal infection of the throat rarely causes hepatitis. However, in a child with biliary atresia, infection may lead to cholangitis. You must get her evaluated by a pediatric gastroenterologist to rule out cholangitis.
