Question
My dentist wants to pull my sons primary canine teeth. She said it is a crowding problem and will help to let the other teeth come in. He will be 9 years old in one month. He just lost the last one of his four front teeth about a month ago. The letters they told me are c, m, and r. I consulted with a Dental Hygienist friend of mine. She says I shouldn't do it. How do I know? I looked online only to find mixing theories. Help ASAP!!! I have the appt this Thursday.
Answer
C, M, and R, are primary canines, which are sometimes extracted to allow for proper alignment of the permanent incisors (which may be slightly "crowded") this would allow the incisors to realign themselves, in the space created. If the teeth are not extracted, the incisors may erupt, out of alignment, but nothing that cannot be resolved by orthodontic treatment later. The dentist by advising the extraction, is pre-empting the situation, and trying to avoid the need for later orthodontics, or so it seems
