Question
11 day old infant, cesarean birth...had quite a bit of wheezing and noisy respiration. Mostly noted when lying flat. Does not appear in distress, but is distressful to new parents. Any suggestions as to probable cause and treatment?
Answer
If other conditions of chest congestion such as pneumonia, meconium aspiration, RDS has been ruled out, one needs to keep in mind laryngotracheomalacia. This is due to underdevelopment of the trachea (wind pipe) leading to collapse of the wind pipe while breathing and hence leads to noisy breathing especially on lying supine. This condition is usually benign and the baby overgrows it by 1 1/2 to 2 years. Sometimes keeping the baby prone also helps. Consult your neonatologist.
