Question
My daughter is 4.5 next month. She has had recurring Bladder Infections & I believe this makes her 3rd UTI. Her Doctor’s office said the Doctor wanted to speak with me, but cannot see me until the weekend (in all a 7 day wait. This concerns me. All they would tell me is that he ordered a GU workup, which no-one seems to be able to explain to me just what this is. The main concern comes from family history. My Aunt, died when she was 20, the cause, kidney failure. Her parents were told time & time again, nothing was wrong, she was fine......then when she was hospitalized, she died, they took to long to do testing. My brother, now 24, had a surgery at age 3. It was a dilation of his urethra. I understand that she may not inherit these things, but am I being to pushy to ask that they run every test under the moon to make sure? Not that I want her to be put through these tests, but i would feel better knowing that she is healthy & there is no underlying illness that could possibly be fatal. Thank-you very much for your time! A Mother in need of advice.
Answer
Your daughter has had repeated urinary infections for which additional workup is required to rule out congenital causes of UTI for which genitourinary workup in the form of MCU may be required. You can get more information about UTIs and the various investigations from the article on URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS on www.pediatriconcall.com or at the link given below:

Regarding the family history, your brother had a penile dilatation. This could be because of improper flow of urine through the urethra due to maybe phimosis or other causes. Regarding your aunt, did she have a renal problem since childhood or was it only in adulthood? If the problem suddenly came up at the age of 20 years, the cause could be acquired and not due to birth defects. If it was due to birth defects, she would have been symptomatic much earlier. Your child seems to have predominantly UTI which is very different clinically from the conditions that your brother and aunt suffered.
